  • Searching for Quasi-periodic Oscillations in Active Galactic Nuclei of the Chandra Deep Field South

    摘要: Recent X-ray observations have revealed growing evidence of quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the light curve of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), which may serve as a useful probe of black hole physics. In this work, we present a systematic search for X-ray QPOs among ~ 1000 AGNs of the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S) in a homogeneous fashion. Dividing the 7-Ms Chandra observations into four epochs, we search for periodic signals that are persistent throughout any of these epochs, using two independent methods: Lomb-Scargle periodogram and Gregory-Loredo Algorithm. No statistically significant periodic signal is found with either method on any of the four epochs. Our extensive simulations of source light curves suggest that this non-detection is primarily due to a moderate sensitivity of the CDF-S data in QPO detection. Using the simulation-predicted detection efficiency, we are able to provide a meaningful constraint on the intrinsic occurrence rate of persistent QPOs, < (15-20) %, provided that they share a similar power spectral density with a handful of currently known AGN QPOs. The true intrinsic occurrence rate might be significantly below this upper limit, however, given the non-detection among the CDF-S sources. Our additional search for short-lived QPOs that are only detected over a small subset of all observations results in two candidates, one in source XID 643 at a period of ~ 13273 s and the other in source XID 876 at a period of ~ 7065 s.

  • Discovery of Galaxy Clusters and a Head-Tail Radio Galaxy in the Direction of Globular Cluster NGC 6752

    摘要: We report the discovery of CXOU J191100-595621 and CXOU J191012-595619, two galaxy clusters serendipitously detected in the direction of globular cluster NGC 6752, based on archival {\it Chandra} observations with a total exposure time of $\sim 344$ ks. The deep {\it Chandra} X-ray data enabled us to measure properties of both systems, which result in a redshift of $z=0.239\pm0.013$ and $z=0.375\pm0.016$, a temperature of $kT=3.32^{+0.57}_{-0.46}$ keV and $kT=3.71^{+1.18}_{-0.86}$ keV, an iron abundance of $Z_{\rm Fe}=0.64^{+0.34}_{-0.29}Z_{\rm Fe\odot}$ and $Z_{\rm Fe}=1.29^{+0.97}_{-0.65}Z_{\rm Fe\odot}$, and a rest-frame full band (0.5-7 keV) luminosity of $L_{\rm X}=9.2^{+1.2}_{-1.1}\times 10^{43} {\rm \, erg\, s^{-1}}$ and $L_{\rm X}=9.9^{+2.7}_{-2.2}\times 10^{43} {\rm \, erg\, s^{-1}}$ for CXOU J191100-595621 and CXOU J191012-595619, respectively. The temperature profile of CXOU J191100-595621 is found to decreases with decreasing radius, indicating a cool core in this cluster. The hydrostatic equilibrium estimation suggests the clusters are moderately weighted, with $M_{500}=(1.3\pm0.4)\times 10^{14}\, M_{\odot}$ and $M_{500}=(2.0\pm1.5)\times 10^{14}\, M_{\odot}$, respectively. We search for optical and radio counterparts of X-ray point sources in the clusters. Three active galactic nuclei are found, among which one is identified with a narrow-angle-tail radio galaxy, and one is found to associated with the brightest central galaxy (BCG) of CXOU J191100-595621.

  • Very Large Array Multi-band Radio Imaging of the Triple AGN Candidate SDSS J0849+1114

    摘要: Kpc-scale triple active galactic nuclei (AGNs), potential precursors of gravitationally-bound triple massive black holes (MBHs), are rarely seen objects and believed to play an important role in the evolution of MBHs and their host galaxies. In this work we present a multi-band (3.0, 6.0 10.0, and 15.0 GHz), high-resolution radio imaging of the triple AGN candidate, SDSS J0849+1114, using the Very Large Array. Two of the three nuclei (A and C) are detected at 3.0, 6.0, and 15 GHz for the first time, both exhibiting a steep spectrum over 3--15 GHz (with a spectral index $-0.90 \pm 0.05$ and $-1.03 \pm 0.04$) consistent with a synchrotron origin. Nucleus A, the strongest nucleus among the three, shows a double-sided jet, with the jet orientation changing by $\sim20^{\circ}$ between its inner 1" and the outer 5.5" (8.1 kpc) components, which may be explained as the MBH's angular momentum having been altered by merger-enhanced accretion. Nucleus C also shows a two-sided jet, with the western jet inflating into a radio lobe with an extent of 1.5" (2.2 kpc). The internal energy of the radio lobe is estimated to be $\rm 5.0 \times 10^{55}$ erg, for an equipartition magnetic field strength of $\rm \sim 160\ \mu G$. No significant radio emission is detected at all four frequencies for nucleus B, yielding an upper limit of 15, 15, 15, and 18 $\rm \mu Jy\ beam^{-1}$ at 3.0, 6.0, 10.0, and 15.0 GHz, based on which we constrain the star formation rate in nucleus B to be $\lesssim 0.4~\rm M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$.

  • A Supernova-driven, Magnetically-collimated Outflow as the Origin of the Galactic Center Radio Bubbles

    摘要: A pair of non-thermal radio bubbles recently discovered in the inner few hundred parsecs of the Galactic center bears a close spatial association with elongated, thermal X-ray features called the X-ray chimneys. While their morphology, position, and orientation vividly point to an outflow from the Galactic center, the physical processes responsible for the outflow remain to be understood. We use three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations to test the hypothesis that the radio bubbles/X-ray chimneys are the manifestation of an energetic outflow driven by multiple core-collapsed supernovae in the nuclear stellar disk, where numerous massive stars are known to be present. Our simulations are run with different combinations of two main parameters, the supernova birth rate and the strength of a global magnetic field being vertically oriented with respect to the disk. The simulation results show that a hot gas outflow can naturally form and acquire a vertically elongated shape due to collimation by the magnetic pressure. In particular, the simulation with an initial magnetic field strength of 80 $\mu$G and a supernova rate of 1 $kyr^{-1}$ can well reproduce the observed morphology, internal energy and X-ray luminosity of the bubbles after an evolutionary time of 330 kyr. On the other hand, a magnetic field strength of 200 $\mu$G gives rise to an overly elongated outflow that is inconsistent with the observed bubbles. The simulations also reveal that, inside the bubbles, mutual collisions between the shock waves of individual supernovae produce dense filaments of locally amplified magnetic field. Such filaments may account for a fraction of the synchrotron-emitting radio filaments known to exist in the Galactic center.

  • An Energetic Hot Wind from the Low-luminosity Active Galactic Nucleus M81*

    摘要: For most of their lifetime, super-massive black holes (SMBHs) commonly found in galactic nuclei obtain mass from the ambient at a rate well below the Eddington limit, which is mediated by a radiatively inefficient, hot accretion flow. Both theory and numerical simulations predict that a strong wind must exist in such hot accretion flows. The wind is of special interest not only because it is an indispensable ingredient of accretion, but perhaps more importantly, it is believed to play a crucial role in the evolution of the host galaxy via the so-called kinetic mode AGN feedback. Observational evidence for this wind, however, remains scarce and indirect. Here we report the detection of a hot outflow from the low-luminosity active galactic nucleus in M81, based on {\it Chandra} high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy. The outflow is evidenced by a pair of Fe XXVI Ly$\alpha$ lines redshifted and blueshifted at a bulk line-of-sight velocity of $\pm2.8\times10^3 \rm~km~s^{-1}$ and a high Fe XXVI Ly$\alpha$-to-Fe XXV K$\alpha$ line ratio implying a plasma temperature of $1.3\times10^8$ Kelvin. This high-velocity, hot plasma cannot be produced by stellar activity or the accretion inflow onto the SMBH. Our magnetohydrodynamical simulations show, instead, it is naturally explained by a wind from the hot accretion flow, propagating out to $\gtrsim10^6$ times the gravitational radius of the SMBH. The kinetic energy and momentum of this wind can significantly affect the evolution of the circumnuclear environment and beyond.

  • A Chandra Survey of Milky Way Globular Clusters. III. Searching for X-ray Signature of Intermediate-mass Black Holes

    摘要: Globular clusters (GCs) are thought to harbor the long-sought population of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs). We present a systematic search for a putative IMBH in 81 Milky Way GCs, based on archival Chandra X-ray observations. We find in only six GCs a significant X-ray source positionally coincident with the cluster center, which have 0.5-8 keV luminosities between $\sim1\times 10^{30}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$ to $\sim 4\times10^{33}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$. However, the spectral and temporal properties of these six sources can also be explained in terms of binary stars. The remaining 75 GCs do not have a detectable central source, most with $3\sigma$ upper limits ranging between $10^{29-32}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$ over 0.5-8 keV, which are significantly lower than predicted for canonical Bondi accretion. To help understand the feeble X-ray signature, we perform hydrodynamic simulations of stellar wind accretion onto a $1000~{\rm M_\odot}$ IMBH from the most-bound orbiting star, for stellar wind properties consistent with either a main-sequence (MS) star or an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star. We find that the synthetic X-ray luminosity for the MS case ($\sim 10^{19}\rm~erg~s^{-1}$) is far below the current X-ray limits. The predicted X-ray luminosity for the AGB case ($\sim 10^{34}\rm~erg~s^{-1}$), on the other hand, is compatible with the detected central X-ray sources, in particular the ones in Terzan 5 and NGC 6652. However, the probability of having an AGB star as the most-bound star around the putative IMBH is very low. Our study strongly suggests that it is very challenging to detect the accretion-induced X-ray emission from IMBHs, even if they were prevalent in present-day GCs.

  • X-ray Constraints on the Hot Gas Content of Early-type Galaxies in Virgo

    摘要: We present a systematic study of the diffuse hot gas around early-type galaxies (ETGs) residing in the Virgo cluster, based on archival {\it Chandra} observations. Our representative sample consists of 79 galaxies with low-to-intermediate stellar masses ($M_* \approx 10^{9-11}\rm~M_\odot$), a mass range that has not been extensively explored with X-ray observations thus far. We detect diffuse X-ray emission in only eight galaxies and find that in five cases a substantial fraction of the detected emission can be unambiguously attributed to truly diffuse hot gas, based on their spatial distribution and spectral properties. For the individually non-detected galaxies, we constrain their average X-ray emission by performing a stacking analysis, finding a specific X-ray luminosity of $L_{\rm X}/M_* \sim 10^{28}{\rm~erg~s^{-1}~M_{\odot}^{-1}}$, which is consistent with unresolved stellar populations. The apparent paucity of truly diffuse hot gas in these low- and intermediate-mass ETGs may be the result of efficient ram pressure stripping by the hot intra-cluster medium. However, we also find no significant diffuse hot gas in a comparison sample of 57 field ETGs of similar stellar masses, for which archival {\it Chandra} observations with similar sensitivity are available. This points to the alternative possibility that galactic winds evacuate the hot gas from the inner region of low- and intermediate-mass ETGs, regardless of the galactic environment. Nevertheless, we do find strong morphological evidence for on-going ram pressure stripping in two galaxies (NGC 4417 and NGC 4459). A better understanding of the roles of ram pressure stripping and galactic winds in regulating the hot gas content of ETGs, invites sensitive X-ray observations for a large galaxy sample.

  • CAHA/PPAK Integral-field Spectroscopic Observations of M81 -- I. Circumnuclear ionized gas

    摘要: Galactic circumnuclear environments of nearby galaxies provide unique opportunities for our understanding of the co-evolution between super-massive black holes and their host galaxies. Here we present a detailed study of ionized gas in the central kiloparsec region of M81, which hosts the closest prototype low-luminosity active galactic nucleus, based on optical integral-field spectroscopic observations taken with the CAHA 3.5m telescope. It is found that much of the circumnuclear ionized gas is concentraed within a bright core of $\sim$200 pc in extent and a surrounding spiral-like structure known as the nuclear spiral. The total mass of the ionized gas is estimated to be $\sim2\times10^5\rm~M_\odot$, which corresponds to a few percent of the cold gas mass in this region, as traced by co-spatial dust extinction features. Plausible signature of a bi-conical outflow along the disk plane is suggested by a pair of blueshifted/redshifted low-velocity features, symmetrically located at $\sim$ 120 -- 250 pc from the nucleus. The spatially-resolved line ratios of [N\,{\sc ii}]/H$\alpha$ and [O\,{\sc iii}]/H$\beta$ demonstrate that much of the circumnuclear region can be classified as LINER (low-ionization nuclear emission-line region). However, substantial spatial variations in the line intensities and line ratios strongly suggest that different ionization/excitation mechanisms, rather than just a central dominant source of photoionization, are simultaneously at work to produce the observed line signatures.

  • Quenching of Massive Disk Galaxies in the IllustrisTNG Simulation

    摘要: A rare population of massive disk galaxies have been found to invade the red sequence dominated by early-type galaxies. These red/quenched massive disk galaxies have recently gained great interest into their formation and origins. The usually proposed quenching mechanisms, such as bar quenching and environment quenching, seem not suitable for those bulge-less quenched disks in low-density environment. In this paper, we use the IllustrisTNG-300 simulation to investigate the formation of massive quenched central disk galaxies. It is found that these galaxies contain less gas and harbor giant supermassive black holes(SMBHs) (above $ 10^{8}M_{\odot}$) than their star forming counterparts. By tracing their formation history, we found that quenched disk galaxies formed early and preserved disk morphology for cosmological time scales. They have experienced less than one major merger on average and it is mainly mini-mergers (mass ratio $<$1/10) that contribute to the growth of their SMBHs. In the Illustris-TNG simulation the black hole feedback mode switches from thermal to kinetic feedback when the black hole mass is more massive than $\sim 10^{8}M_{\odot}$, which is more efficient to eject gas outside of the galaxy and to suppress further cooling of hot gaseous halo. We conclude that kinetic AGN feedback in massive red/quenched disk galaxy is the dominant quenching mechanism.

  • Evidence for A Hot Wind from High-resolution X-ray Spectroscopic Observation of the Low-luminosity Active Galactic Nucleus in NGC 7213

    摘要: Super-massive black holes (SMBHs) spend most of their lifetime accreting at a rate well below the Eddington limit, manifesting themselves as low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs). The prevalence of a hot wind from LLAGNs is a generic prediction by theories and numerical simulations of black hole accretion and is recently becoming a crucial ingredient of AGN kinetic feedback in cosmological simulations of galaxy evolution. However, direct observational evidence for this hot wind is still scarce. In this work, we identify significant Fe XXVI Ly$\alpha$ and Fe XXV K$\alpha$ emission lines from high-resolution Chandra grating spectra of the LLAGN in NGC\,7213, a nearby Sa galaxy hosting a $\sim10^8\rm~M_\odot$ SMBH, confirming previous work. We find that these lines exhibit a blueshifted line-of-sight velocity of $\sim1100\rm~km s^{-1}$ and a high XXVI Ly$\alpha$ to XXV K$\alpha$ flux ratio implying for a $\sim16$ keV hot plasma. By confronting these spectral features with synthetic X-ray spectra based on our custom magnetohydrodynamical simulations, we find that the high-velocity, hot plasma is naturally explained by the putative hot wind driven by the hot accretion flow powering this LLAGN. Alternative plausible origins of this hot plasma, including stellar activities, AGN photoionization and the hot accretion flow itself, are quantitatively disfavored. The inferred kinetic energy and momentum carried by the wind can serve as strong feedback to the environment. We compare NGC\,7213 to M81*, in which strong evidence for a hot wind was recently presented, and discuss implications on the universality and detectability of hot winds from LLAGNs.

  • NOEMA Detection of Circumnuclear Molecular Gas in X-ray Weak Dual Active Galactic Nuclei: No Evidence for Heavy Obscuration

    摘要: Dual active galactic nuclei (AGN), which are the manifestation of two actively accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs) hosted by a pair of merging galaxies, are a unique laboratory for studying the physics of SMBH feeding and feedback during an indispensable stage of galaxy evolution. In this work, we present NOEMA CO(2-1) observations of seven kpc-scale dual-AGN candidates drawn from a recent Chandra survey of low-redshift, optically classified AGN pairs. These systems are selected because they show unexpectedly low 2-10 keV X-ray luminosities for their small physical separations signifying an intermediate-to-late stage of merger. Circumnuclear molecular gas traced by the CO(2-1) emission is significantly detected in 6 of the 7 pairs and 10 of the 14 nuclei, with an estimated mass ranging between $(0.2 - 21) \times10^9\rm~M_{\odot}$. The primary nuclei, i.e., the ones with the higher stellar velocity dispersion, tend to have a higher molecular gas mass than the secondary. Most CO-detected nuclei show a compact morphology, with a velocity field consistent with a kpc-scale rotating structure. The inferred hydrogen column densities range between $5\times10^{21} - 2\times10^{23}\rm~cm^{-2}$, but mostly at a few times $10^{22}\rm~cm^{-2}$, in broad agreement with those derived from X-ray spectral analysis. Together with the relatively weak mid-infrared emission, the moderate column density argues against the prevalence of heavily obscured, intrinsically luminous AGNs in these seven systems, but favors a feedback scenario in which AGN activity triggered by a recent pericentric passage of the galaxy pair can expel circumnuclear gas and suppress further SMBH accretion.

  • CHANG-ES. XXIV. First Detection of A Radio Nuclear Ring and Potential LLAGN in NGC 5792

    摘要: We report the discoveries of a nuclear ring of diameter 10$\arcsec$ ($\sim$1.5 kpc) and a potential low luminosity active galactic nucleus (LLAGN) in the radio continuum emission map of the edge-on barred spiral galaxy NGC~5792. These discoveries are based on the Continuum Halos in Nearby Galaxies - an Expanded Very Large Array (VLA) Survey, as well as subsequent VLA observations of sub-arcsecond resolution. Using a mixture of H$\alpha$ and 24 $\mu$m calibration, we disentangle the thermal and non-thermal radio emission of the nuclear region, and derive a star formation rate (SFR) of $\sim 0.4~M_{\sun}$ yr$^{-1}$. We find that the nuclear ring is dominated by non-thermal synchrotron emission. The synchrotron-based SFR is about three times of the mixture-based SFR. This result indicates that the nuclear ring underwent more intense star-forming activity in the past, and now its star formation is in the low state. The sub-arcsecond VLA images resolve six individual knots on the nuclear ring. The equipartition magnetic field strength $B_{\rm eq}$ of the knots varies from 77 to 88 $\mu$G. The radio ring surrounds a point-like faint radio core of $S_{\rm 6GHz}=(16\pm4)$ $\mu$Jy with polarized lobes at the center of NGC~5792, which suggests an LLAGN with an Eddington ratio $\sim10^{-5}$. This radio nuclear ring is reminiscent of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Galaxy. Both of them consist of a nuclear ring and LLAGN.

  • Nonlinear optical radiation of a lithium niobate microcavity

    摘要: The nonlinear optical radiation of an integrated lithium niobate microcavity is demonstrated, which has been neglected in previous studies of nonlinear photonic devices. We find that the nonlinear coupling between confined optical modes on the chip and continuum modes in free space can be greatly enhanced on the platform of integrated microcavity, with feasible relaxation of the phase-matching condition. With an infrared pump laser, we observe the vertical radiation of second-harmonic wave at the visible band, which indicates a robust phase-matching-free chip-to-free-space frequency converter and also unveils an extra energy dissipation channel for integrated devices. Such an unexpected coherent nonlinear interaction between the free-space beam and the confined mode is also validated by the different frequency generation. Furthermore, based on the phase-matching-free nature of the nonlinear radiation, we build an integrated atomic gas sensor to characterize Rb isotopes with a single telecom laser. The unveiled mechanism of nonlinear optical radiation is universal for all dielectric photonic integrated devices, and provides a simple and robust chip-to-free-space as well as visible-to-telecom interface.

  • Discovery of novel pyrrolopyrimidine analogues as potent dipeptidyl peptidase IV inhibitors based on a pharmacokinetic property-driven optimization

    摘要: Followed pharmacological evaluation exposed an extensive hepatic first pass effect within our recently disclosed DPP-IV inhibitors bearing thienopyrimidine scaffold. Through scaffold replacement with pyrrolopyrimidine, compound 1a had substantially improved the metabolic stability (from 6.6% to 65.07%), yet with severely poor absorptive property. Further modification by incorporation with varied substituents and structure conversion yielded both permeable and metabolic stable compounds. The whole pharmacokinetic- property based optimization had succeeded in balancing overall properties and resulted in the compound 1j, that with excellent efficacy to be a potential anti-diabetic candidate.

  • Discovery of multiple lead compounds as M2 inhibitors through the screening of a focused library of scaffold-hops

    摘要: It is urgent to discover new anti-influenza drugs considering the threat of so called swine flu and Spanish flu. Though Adamantane derivatives are the only M2 inhibitors as anti-influenza virus A drugs, they are limited to use in the US due to drug resistant. Herein we reported that multiple lead compounds as M2 inhibitors were rapidly generated through the screening of focused library designed with scaffold-hopping strategy based on Amantadine.
